It is an opportunity for the Oakhurst Community Garden Project to share a wealth of classes for the whole family that focus on sustainable lifeskills such as gardening, cooking, arts and science.  Brought to you by a talented group of teachers, you will learn and meet community members while growing new skills.  Support the OCGP by becoming a member and enjoying our classes.

Mini 2Day Spring Bee Camp
Monday and Tuesday, April 2 and 3, 9-12pm
$60 Garden Members,  $70 Non Members
Join Marie-Lies and our Beekeeper Cassandra Lawson during Spring Break for an inside peek into the world of beekeeping. This mini Bee camp is a great way to introduce bee keeping to your child and see if they would like to take our more extensive summer bee camp. Day 1, students will learn about honey bees and the hive and on day 2 they will get to harvest and taste honey!  Please bring a Snack. Perfect for ages 7-12. 5 person Minimum and Advanced registration is required

Beyond Homesteading: Intro to Family Husbandry at Darby Farms

Bring the family or come solo and Join Daniel at Darby Farms and learn about how Daniel manages his successful poultry business. You will learn about how he raises a variety of chickens and turkeys for eggs and meat. Daniel will share how he found his farming dream, his future goals, and what the daily chores and farm calendar looks like. Participants will enjoy the down home feel by helping with feeding chores, see how farming can be attainable, and view symbiotic relationships between chickens, pigs, dogs, and cats. Daniel is a regular at the Decatur Farmers Markets and participants may purchase eggs. Children ages 7-10 are welcome. . 5 person minimum. Advanced registration required.
 
Chickens are Easy! Intro to Keeping Chickens
Saturday, April  28,  10-12pm
$15 members, $20 non members
Join The Celtic Gardener, Anne-Marie Anderson, for our popular chicken crash course. This class will cover the basics of coop design, relevant ordinances, breed selection, care and feeding and outside resources. Anne-Marie is a local keeper of an “urban flock," and learned about chickens through our courses and events. She is also a member of OCG's Bee Team, and enjoys spreading the word about sustainable gardening and urban farming. The last 30 min of the class is Q &A .  Reserve your spot today! 5 person minimum. Raising Chickens for Meat: How to Process Chickens
Sunday, April 29, 8:30am -10:30am  
$20 for Garden members, $25 for non-members
 Location: Darby Farms 2795 Nunnally Shoals Rd  Good Hope, GA 30641

Soil Testing and Prepping for your Summer Garden (register by Friday 10am)

Join our Head Gardener, Daniel Ballard , and dig into your soil now to get it ready for a luscious summer yield.  This class will cover soil testing, amendments, and preparations to create an atmosphere that will foster happy healthy plants. Join Lindsey Mann, of www.sustenancedesign.net, Sugar Creek Garden Manager  and learn innovative solutions for a productive home gardener.  Turn your land into abundance by planting perennial fruits and herbs. See how uncommon fruits, like paw paws and pineapple, can work in your landscape. Lindsey will also share info about edible flowers, medicinal and native plants. This class is held at the Oakhurst Garden. 5min. Advanced registration required.
 
Principles of Permaculture; Work Where is Counts

Join Garden Designer Brandy Hall and explore the ethics, attitudes, and principles of a growing movement called Permaculture in this intensive 3hr intro/hands on class. Permaculture is an approach to designing our settlements and agricultural systems that is modeled on the relationships found in nature. This class will include hands on demonstrations with all materials included and is held at our sister site, Sugar Creek Garden in the Oakhurst Neighborhood of Decatur. Sugar Creek Garden is located in the floodplain behind Oakhurst Presbyterian Church at East Lake Drive and Second Avenue (across the street from the dog park). Brandy Hall passionately engages communities through education, design, and installation of food forests and perennial farms and gardens through her small ecological design firm, Shades of Green at www.shadesofgreeninc.org. 5min. Good Bug, Bad Bug: Attract the Right Ones for your Garden

Join Master Gardener Mary Hines and get an answer to that most common of gardening questions: "What is that bug!?"  Learn about the most common insects and spiders in our region and whether they are beneficial or harmful to vegetable, flower, and ornamental gardens. Participants will learn how to identify bugs, how to control pest populations (with an emphasis on organic methods), and how to encourage beneficial insects. 5 person minimum. Planting a Spring Garden
Sunday, April 1, 2-4pm
$15 Garden members, $20 non-members
You have read some books, maybe attended a few classes, but may not feel comfortable with the actual process of putting plants and seeds in the ground. Lyn and Bob Bernstein are ready to guide you as you sow seeds for peas, spinach, lettuce, beets, carrots as well as plant broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and other transplants into the ground. The planting will follow the smart space method developed by Mel Bartholomew in his book All New Square Foot Gardening. 5 person minimum. Advanced registration required.
 
Garden Design 101
Thursday, April 12, 7-9pm

Class participants will learn an easy, low maintenance way to significantly reduce kitchen waste, reduce your carbon footprint, and create a fantastic soil amendment. Vermiculture is experiencing a surge of interest as gardeners, farmers and municipalities employ this technology to reduce food waste and improve soils organically.  5 person minimum. Gardening For Food and Nutrition

 Learn how save money on your food bills with gardening!  Join Glynis Ward as she teaches you about the seasons of food and how to construct tasty meal plans around your garden. You will learn about plants that give the highest yield/nutrition and methods to keep costs down.  Eat the freshest and most nutritious meals from your backyard. 5 person minimum. Build Your Own Worm Bin

Join Michael McLane in building and maintaining your own worm bin. Class participants will be provided the materials, tools and instructions needed to build their own low-cost bin. Cook Great Food -no Wheat or Dairy: Easy to Digest Recipes

More and more people are learning they are sensitive or even allergic to foods we tend to use daily. This class will reveal the healthy alternatives! Make sauces without flour, cake & cookies without eggs, dairy or wheat! Adjust some recipes and learn when to just start all over with a new recipe. Let's Make Fermented Foods (Sauerkraut, chutney, kefir, kim chi)

Every culture has foods that are fermented or "pickled". Learn the process. Fermented food helps your body stay healthy and assists in digesting other food.  Come prepared to cut up your own cabbage to make sauerkraut in this hands on participatory class. Bring your own quart jars in which to take
your ferments home. We will make at least 2 recipes. This class is taught by one our "regulars", Charli Vogt, RN who loves doing anything that involves the kitchen. www.BeyondTheMeasuringCup.com . Recycled Glass Garden Tiles
Tuesday, April 17, 7-9pm
$20 Garden Member, $25 Non Member
Join Molly Krava of rockwaterglass.com and she will show you how to make a lasting fused recycled glass garden tile using fusible glass paints on tiles made from fused bottles to create colorful creative designs for your garden. We will sketch first to generate ideas. The paint does not have to go in the kiln, so you can take your piece home with you after class. I will provide paint, stencils and glass embellishments to attach to the tiles if you wish. This class is suitable for ages 6+ with adult. Class is great for solo adults as well as couples! 5 person Minimum and Advanced registration is required
 
Fused Jewelry Making (2 part class)
Thursday , May 3 and May 10,  7- 9pm
$35 member $40 non-member
Join Molly Krava of rockwaterglass.com and learn how to create your own fused glass pendants. This class is in two parts. The first class, we will design 5 glass pendants using various glass mediums including dichroic glass, frits, stringers, tiny glass flowers, and glass decals. In the second class, I will show you how to wrap the fired pieces in wire to hang them on a chain, or attach a bail if you prefer or make magnets.. Each student can make 5 medium- large sized pieces into pendants. If you wish to make a few more, material will be provided in class for an additional fee. Make your own Mother’s Day gifts! Feel free to bring wine and snacks. 5 person Minimum and Advanced registration is required

Make Faeries and Share your Wishes

Join 8 yr old Garden Faerie Expert Eleanor, aka Amber Dew, and learn how to make your own faeries from items found in any home. Participants will create elves and faeries to take home and to decorate the garden. We will also create notes, messages, wishes, and greetings to leave for the faeries. You may find a treasure or 2 as a thank you from our hidden garden wee ones. This is a drop off class with a 5 person Minimum and Advanced registration is required. Ages 5-10.

Walk through the Stream!
Saturday, May 5, 10-11am
$5 for Garden members, $10 for non-members
The Garden is lucky to offer many ecosystems to explore including the living Shoal Creek that flows behind it.  With nets, gloves, and boots provided, your 6+ adventurer will enjoy a fun hour looking for dragonflies, fish, crawdads and more.  Join Don and Cris Lake, members of the Shoal Creek Watershed Alliance, and they will share and enhance your child’s environmental education. Parents many drop off or stay. Limited boots and gloves are available so you may want to bring your own. Long sleeve shirts and pants and bug spray are highly recommended.  5 minimum and pre-registration is required.
