Community Gardens
Community Gardens
There are
several ways a community can be brought closer together for the good of
all. The community garden concept is a
perfect example of one that serves this purpose but also has the added
advantage of “putting food on the table” for the participants.
To
accomplish this goal, however, is not an easy task and takes team work and a
certain amount of expertise. Once
successful the community garden can serve as a tool to bring a community closer
together and also serve as a vital tool for community education on many
subjects.
On this
blog I have added such an example – the Oakhurst Community Garden Project in
Decatur, Georgia. I am not a member that
cultivates a plot of ground but am a financial supporter to this very active
and successful operation.
Multiple
steps go into starting a garden and I will briefly discuss some, but not all.
A.
Site Selection
·
Usually 6 hours of full sun for vegetables.
·
Soil testing for nutrient and heavy metal
content.
·
Knowledge of past use of the land. Is there contamination?
·
Availability of water.
·
Best to get a lease or agreement that will allow
the use of the land for at least 3 years.
B.
Preparation of the soil
·
Organize volunteer work crews.
·
Making decision of who is responsible for
various costs not related to individual gardens.
·
Individual plot size.
·
Organic or non-organic.
C.
Organization:
The purpose of garden at is simplest form is a plot for each individual
to grow vegetables or flowers. At the
other extreme, it is an activity/organization that serves as a focus for
community activity and education.
Other
things that will need to be done are bylaws, possible permits, membership
requirements
and dues.

Soil Testing
The purpose
of soil testing is essentially two-fold.
First is to identify the presence of needed nutrients in the soil that
are vital for plant growth. The second
is to detect abnormal levels of toxic minerals – particularly lead. This is particularly true in urban areas
where the history of prior land use is unknown.
This concern however can be in rural and suburban areas.
Lead is the
metal we are most concerned about.
Excessive accumulation of lead in the body can have a very debilitating
effect on all body systems. This is
particularly true in fetuses and young children.
The most
common causes of lead contamination are dust and chips from lead based paints,
exhaust from leaded gasoline, and lead arsenate in pesticides. All were banned in the 1980’s but the danger
persists in our soil.
The
University of Connecticut’s soil nutrient laboratory has been studying this
problem for years and a wealth of knowledge for community garden advocates is
available from their website.
The
enclosed information from the Oakhurst Community Garden Project is a good
example of what benefits a community garden can bring to a community.
